How Does Myotherapy Help Fibromyalgia?

Myotherapy cannot cure fibromyalgia. But used correctly it is one of the most effective tools for managing it. Here is how and why.

Fibromyalgia requires a carefully considered treatment approach. Because the nervous system is central to the condition, processing pain signals differently and amplifying them, treatments that focus purely on the physical can miss the point.

Myotherapy works well for fibromyalgia not despite this complexity but because of it. A skilled clinical myotherapist understands the relationship between muscle tension, trigger points, how the nervous system is responding and pain. That understanding shapes how treatment is delivered from the very first session.

The key with fibromyalgia is not to push through. It is to work with the nervous system, not against it.

What myotherapy addresses in fibromyalgia

Even though fibromyalgia involves changes in how the nervous system processes pain, there are almost always peripheral contributing factors that myotherapy can address directly. Tight muscles, active trigger points, restricted movement and postural strain all feed into the overall pain experience.

Trigger point therapy releases hyperirritable knots in muscle tissue that generate and amplify local and referred pain. In fibromyalgia, where the nervous system is already processing pain more intensely, these trigger points can be particularly active and particularly painful. Releasing them reduces the overall pain load and calms some of the peripheral input contributing to the experience of widespread pain.

Soft tissue work improves tissue quality, circulation and mobility in areas that have become stiff and restricted. Better movement means less compensation, less muscle overload and less pain input feeding into an already sensitised system.

The importance of treatment dosage

One of the most important considerations when treating fibromyalgia with myotherapy is dosage. Because the nervous system is processing pain more intensely, aggressive or heavy-handed treatment can cause significant post-treatment flare-ups. This is one of the most common mistakes made by practitioners who are not experienced with this population.

At Back to Life Pain Clinic, treatment is always calibrated to the individual. Sessions for fibromyalgia clients tend to be lighter in pressure, more targeted and spaced with adequate recovery time. The goal is to reduce pain input without triggering a flare. Progress is gradual and intentional.

Aggressive treatment for fibromyalgia almost always makes things worse. The skill is in knowing how much is enough and how much is too much. That calibration is what makes the difference.

Dry needling and fibromyalgia

Dry needling, inserting fine needles into trigger points to release them, can be an effective tool for fibromyalgia when used carefully. Some clients respond very well to it. Others find it too stimulating given how their nervous system is currently responding.

The decision to use dry needling is always made on an individual basis and introduced gradually if used at all. It is never assumed to be appropriate simply because it is effective for other pain conditions.

Movement as part of the picture

Exercise is one of the most evidence-supported interventions for fibromyalgia but it needs to be carefully dosed. Too much too soon causes flare-ups. Too little leads to deconditioning which worsens pain over time.

At Back to Life, the movement component is built into the treatment plan from the beginning. We do not just treat in the session and send you home. We build a progressive program that supports what is happening in treatment and gives your body the stimulus it needs to improve without pushing it into a flare.
